Final Fantasy IX

An intentional step backwards

I went into this one really wanting to like it. The art style wasn't for me, but it's the favorite of many, so there had to be something else to it. I wanted to see what they saw in it. Unfortunately, this one ended up not being for me.

Final Fantasy VIII

Ironically, a game ahead of its time

This game has one of the worst reputations in the series. New fans are encouraged to skip it. Many echo this reputation without giving it a chance. More people should try it. It's not perfect, but way better than it gets credit for.

Final Fantasy VII

A masterpiece for everyone but me, apparently

This is the the first Final Fantasy game I ever attempted to play. I had heard so much about the series, and this was overwhelmingly acclaimed as a "must-play" game. Sadly, with years in-between, it took 4 tries for me to complete it.

Judgment

A modern noir story with its own extraordinary style

This is Ryu Ga Gotoku's storytelling at its peak paired with the best gameplay so far. The studio used this spinoff as an opportunity to experiment without the confines of the main series. Not everything was a hit, but most was.

Yakuza 6

Growing pains, unfortunately right at the end

The third reimagining of the series in as many games. Everything is new: gameplay, sound, look, and tone. The first game to use the Dragon Engine, but they clearly hadn't quite figured out how to take advantage of it.
